KATJA FELLE: Paintings 2024–2026

This exhibition presents Katja Felle’s most recent body of work. Through a dialogue between different media, the artist continues her exploration of the evolution of painting in the digital age and in the context of the rapid development of artificial intelligence. The selected works reveal a shift from the figurative representations and mimetic fragments that characterised her earlier practice towards abstraction, while investigating the in-between space of digital fluidity.

Felle’s work is rooted in digital aesthetics, which she simultaneously reflects upon and deconstructs through traditional artistic media and meticulous manual craftsmanship. The exhibition features oil paintings, watercolours, and pastels created over the past two years. The pastel works were produced during an artist residency at NKD – Nordisk Kunstnarsenter Dale in Norway.

At the heart of the exhibition lies the question of the materiality of the image in an age of constant digital circulation of visual information, as well as the relationship between the slowness of the painterly process and the immediacy of contemporary visual experience. Through layering, blurring, and fragmentation, the works create a tension between the physical presence of the painting and its seemingly digital ephemerality.

NEGOVAN NEMEC: From Line to Form
A Retrospective Exhibition Marking the 80th Anniversary of the Artist’s Birth and the 40th Anniversary of His Death

The year 2027 marks the 80th anniversary of the birth and the 40th anniversary of the death of the distinguished sculptor Negovan Nemec, whose extensive body of work left a profound mark on both the Gorizia region and the broader Slovenian artistic landscape, securing him an important place in the history of modern Slovenian sculpture. To commemorate these significant anniversaries, the Nova Gorica City Gallery, in collaboration with Zavod Miren Kras and the Kulturni dom Gorizia (Italy), is organising a major retrospective exhibition. The exhibition will present works drawn primarily from the artist’s family estate, which preserves key pieces from every stage of his artistic career. It will offer a comprehensive insight into the evolution of Nemec’s artistic expression—from his early explorations of form to the mature works in which he developed his distinctive and highly recognisable sculptural language.

The exhibition will be accompanied by a catalogue offering a renewed assessment of Nemec’s significance within Slovenian art history. The publication will explore various aspects of his oeuvre while highlighting the enduring relevance of his artistic language, which continues to resonate through its expressive power, sensitivity to material, and profound engagement with the relationship between humanity and space.

The exhibition is organised in collaboration with Zavod Miren Kras and the Kulturni dom Gorica/Gorizia (Italy).

HERMAN PIVK: From the Darkroom
Photographs

Herman Pivk is regarded as one of the leading figures of contemporary Slovenian photography, having expanded the photographic medium beyond its documentary function. Following an early period devoted to “pure photography,” he turned in the 1980s towards experimental interventions carried out during the photographic developing process itself. Through chemical and manual manipulation, he gradually distanced the photographic image from the direct representation of reality, bringing it closer to the subjectivity and uniqueness associated with painting. His work is characterised by a distinctive artistic vision, an interplay of light, atmosphere, and materiality, and an ongoing exploration of the boundaries between photography and the visual arts.

The retrospective exhibition From the Darkroom, organised in collaboration with GONG Gallery, presents a selection of works from different stages of the artist’s career, highlighting Herman Pivk’s significant contribution to the development of contemporary Slovenian photography.

MARUŠA ŠTIBELJ: Embracing Grief
Collages on Canvas and Paper

Maruša Štibelj’s artistic practice is centred on collage, through which she constructs new layers of meaning from fragments of old magazines and newspapers. Drawing upon remnants of past narratives, she creates complex visual structures that examine relationships between people, between genders, and between the individual and society, while simultaneously exposing the mechanisms of manipulation, influence, and power. In her work, collage is understood as an autonomous and expandable medium that extends beyond the mere assembly of images to become a space for investigating materiality and meaning. She pays particular attention to preserving the original colour palette of the printed materials she uses, emphasising both the traces of time and the visual authenticity of the medium. Through the processes of rearranging and transforming images, she develops visual structures that encourage viewers to reflect on relationships, interpretation, and the continual transformation of meaning. This approach positions collage within the field of critical visual analysis of contemporary social structures. OTO RIMELE and BORKO TEPINA: Contour of Light
Paintings

Contour of Light brings together the artistic practices of Oto Rimele and Borko Tepina in an exploration of the relationship between contour, light, and the space in between. The exhibition is built around the question of whether light possesses its own contour and whether a contour can itself become light, examining how the visible and the intuited, the material and the immaterial, intertwine within the pictorial image. Both artists, drawing on decades of painting practice, explore the expansion of the pictorial field through their distinctive visual languages. Rimele dematerialises the image through coloured shadows and interventions of light, opening the painting into a space beyond its surface. Tepina, by contrast, creates a tension between the object and its absence, investigating the in-between space as a field of perception.

The exhibition thus becomes a meeting point between two independent yet fundamentally related artistic positions. It brings together two mature artistic practices, each questioning, in its own way, the relationship between form and its disappearance, and exploring light both as a phenomenon and as a carrier of meaning. The gallery’s circular exhibition space encourages visitors to engage in a contemplative experience and to participate in the creation of meanings that emerge within the space between perception and thought. In this sense, the exhibition transcends the conventional exhibition format, establishing itself as an open field for experience, reflection, and interpretation.

BETWEEN THE SEA AND STONE
Art of the Trieste and Primorska Region

The exhibition Between the Sea and Stone, organised by the Gallery of Prešeren Award Laureates in Kranj, the Goriška Museum Kromberk–Nova Gorica, and the Nova Gorica City Gallery, presents visual artists and writers from the Trieste and Primorska region who have received the Prešeren Award or the Prešeren Fund Award, with a particular focus on artists from Trieste. Bringing together visual art and literature, the exhibition places the works of Černigoj, Spacal, Palčič, Vecchiet, and Komel in dialogue with the writings of Kosovel, Gruden, Košuta, Kravos, Quaglia, Pahor, Rebula, and Jelinčič. It highlights the shared cultural landscape of Trieste, the Karst, and the Gorizia region, while exploring the close relationship between art and literature.

The exhibition is also connected to the Year of Kosovel celebrations, with Srečko Kosovel occupying a central place as one of the defining cultural figures of the region. The project is complemented by a presentation of the painter Silvester Komel, whose work connects the Gorizia area with the broader Primorska cultural context.

The exhibition is accompanied by a bilingual publication that, for the first time, brings together in a comprehensive volume the Prešeren Award and Prešeren Fund Award recipients from this region.
