Domen Koren (Slovenia)

Domen Koren, saxophonist, began his musical journey under the guidance of Prof. Betka Bizjak Kotnik at the Moste-Polje Music School and continued his education at the Ljubljana Conservatory of Music and Ballet in the class of Prof. Lev Pupis. He earned his Master’s degree summa cum laude from the Academy of Music in Ljubljana under Prof. Matjaž Drevenšek, further honing his expertise through specialized studies with Prof. Vincent David at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. During his studies, he also refined his skills with Prof. Joonatan Rautiola at the Sibelius Academy (Helsinki, Finland), Prof. Antonio Felipe Belijar at the Superior Conservatory of Music of Castilla-La Mancha (Albacete, Spain), and Prof. Mariano García at the Superior Conservatory of Music of Aragon (Zaragoza, Spain).

He is a multiple first-prize winner and recipient of gold plaques at numerous national and international competitions. His most notable achievements include winning the international competition in Gran Canaria, securing second place at the Werner Pirchner Preis in Innsbruck, and twice winning third place at the SaxGo international competition in Nova Gorica.

As a soloist, he has performed with several prestigious ensembles, including the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the Slovenian Philharmonic String Chamber Orchestra, the Ljubljana Academy of Music String Chamber Orchestra, the Gran Canaria Chamber Orchestra, the Slovenian Armed Forces Orchestra, the Tyrolean State Conservatory Orchestra, and the Gran Canaria Wind Orchestra.

 

Domen successfully integrates his artistic career with pedagogical work. In addition to teaching at music schools, he regularly leads seminars and masterclasses both at home and abroad and serves as a jury member at music competitions. He is a mentor and conductor for the Slovenian Youth Saxophone Orchestra SOS and the International Youth Saxophone Orchestra ADA under the auspices of the Cultural Society Sekvoja, where he also participates in organizing and leading various international festivals and seminars.

 

In addition to his teaching, he is a member of several chamber ensembles, including the Ljubljana Saxophone Quartet, with which he performs at concerts and festivals across Slovenia and Europe. Alongside his chamber music activities, Domen regularly collaborates with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and frequently performs with the Slovenian Philharmonic Orchestra, the RTV Slovenia Symphony Orchestra, the SNG Opera and Ballet Ljubljana Orchestra, the Slovenian Police Orchestra, and the Slovenian Armed Forces Orchestra. He collaborates with Jeunesses Musicales Slovenia, the Ljubljana Festival, and Jeunesses Musicales Ljubljana, and has presented himself at three World Saxophone Congresses (Spain, Croatia, and France).

 

He has also performed with the Salzburg Wind Philharmonic and the Sibelius Academy Symphony Orchestra. Following successful auditions, he became a member of world-renowned youth orchestras, including the Gustav Mahler Jugendorchester (GMJO), the European Union Youth Orchestra (EUYO), and the Schleswig-Holstein Festival Orchestra (SHFO), performing in the world’s most prestigious concert halls.

 

An active collaborator with both Slovenian and international composers, Domen has had several works dedicated to him and has performed numerous world premieres. He is a recipient of the Prešeren Award of the Academy of Music and is a former scholarship holder of the Ministry of Culture of the Republic of Slovenia.

 

He currently teaches saxophone at the Music School of the Conservatory of Music and Ballet Ljubljana and the Franc Šturm Music School, while also maintaining an active career as a freelance musical artist.
